Building Support for Early Career Educators

This workshop is designed for mathematics educators new to teaching within the last five years, including recent education graduates and those entering teaching through non-traditional pathways.

The goal of this program is to provide early career educators a foundation for professional growth. Participants will explore teaching strategies from experienced T3™ Instructors and leverage a support network to assist in their teaching.

The workshop focuses on:

  • Lesson planning
  • Adapting high-quality activities/tasks
  • Classroom management
  • Facilitating effective discussions
  • Professional reflection
  • TI technology skills

By the end of this workshop, participants will have established a starting foundation to help build the knowledge, skills and support necessary to become successful educators.

Program Structure and Areas of Focus

In-Person Session (Total of Six Hours)

Choose One Full Day or Two Half Days

Participants will engage in hands-on, interactive sessions designed to enhance their teaching practices and effectively integrate TI technology and resources.

These sessions may be customized based on the needs of the participants, and may include:

  • An interactive overview of TI graphing calculators and software capabilities.
  • Data collection activities that encourage mathematical questioning and data modeling.
  • Introduction to a STEM project connecting mathematics curriculum with real-world applications.
  • Adapting rich tasks to align with student needs and curriculum standards.
  • Classroom management strategies and teacher moves.
  • Exploration of various free TI resources for lesson planning.

Six Online Follow-Up Sessions (One Hour Each)

Participants will take part in online sessions as an educator community to reinforce topics learned in the in-person session. These sessions typically include:

  • Lesson planning
  • Identifying high-quality tasks
  • Facilitating effective discussions
  • TI technology skills

To best meet the needs of the educator community, the topics covered in online follow-up sessions may be customized based on their progress throughout the school year. Key opportunities for professional reflection and resources for support will be highlighted as they are identified.

Example of a Customized Focus Area

The workshop can be tailored to focus on specific topics as needed for mathematics educators from grades 6–12.

For example, if educators need to learn how to adapt rich tasks with technology to teach local curriculum standards, the workshop will prioritize a focus on teaching educators to assist students by:

  • Promoting cognitive challenge.
  • Balancing procedural skills and fluency with conceptual understanding.
  • Providing opportunities to communicate mathematical understanding.
  • Engaging with opportunities for choice and relevance in the math content.
