Learning to Code with the TI-Innovator™ Hub

This workshop is designed for educators interested in learning more about coding using the TI-Innovator™ Hub with TI-Launchpad™ Board to further engage students in coding and STEM applications.

Building upon the lessons from TI’s 10 Minutes of Code for the TI-Innovator™ Hub, the workshop shows participants how to control the Hub and the built-in light and sound sensors. The coding applications covered will be connected to concepts in math and science.

By the end of the workshop, participants should be comfortable:

  • Writing programs that control input and output commands on the Hub using the TI-84 Plus CE graphing calculator Program Editor or TI-Nspire™ CX handheld Program Editor
  • Using variables in a program
  • Using syntax to input numbers into a program
  • Exploring other coding techniques such as using lists
  • Applying what they have learned to create their own activities

Overview

This is a one-day, in-person workshop. It can be combined with either the “Learning to Code With TI-84 Plus Family of Graphing Calculators” workshop or the “Learning to Code With TI-Nspire™ Technology” workshop to create a two-day workshop. A half-day workshop option is also available. A virtual workshop is also available in multiple two- or three-hour sessions.

During this workshop, participants will learn to:

workshop-1-day
  • Write programs that control the light, LED and sound devices on the Hub
  • Use loops to control color, color and sound
  • Use If … Then … Else … End statements to adjust the brightness level to affect output devices
  • Explore further functionality of the Hub and of programming

Areas of Focus

This workshop connects coding to curriculum concepts. No experience on the TI-84 Plus CE graphing calculator or TI-Nspire™ CX handheld will be required as basic technology skills will be covered as they are needed.

Subject Topics
Getting Started
Write a program that uses the color LED to simulate a traffic light.
For Loops
Use the random number generator to create random musical notes.
Brightness, IF and While
Write a program that uses the light sensor to control sound.
Guided Projects
Write a program that plays a song or creates LED patterns.
