Learning to Code With Python on TI-Nspire™ CX II Technology

This workshop is designed for educators interested in introducing Python coding to their students using TI-Nspire™ CX II technology. The workshop introduces the basics of Python coding principles including logic, selection statements and loops.

A focus will be on coding topics which will reinforce student understanding of math curriculum concepts.

By the end of the workshop, participants will be comfortable with:

  • Starting a new program, writing a program to display text, and running the program
  • Using global and local variables in a program and understanding the differences between global and local variables
  • Writing input statements and statements using IF and conditions
  • Using loop structures
  • Importing modules
  • Determining errors in a program

Overview

This is a one-day, in-person or virtual workshop. A half-day workshop option is also available.

During this workshop, participants will learn to:

workshop-1-day
  • Use the Python Editor to create and run programs
  • Evaluate expressions and store them as variables
  • Define functions
  • Recognize programing features including conditions, relational operators, logical operators, and simple and compound conditions
  • Use loop structures
  • Perform the steps for debugging a program

Areas of focus

This workshop connects coding to curriculum concepts. No experience on TI-Nspire™ CX II technology will be required as basic skills on TI‑Nspire™ CX II technology will be covered as they are needed.

Subject Topics
Program Basics

Write a program to evaluate a mathematical formula.

Assigning Values to Variables

Write a program that uses some simple assignment statements and arithmetic to perform some coding “magic.”

Conditional Statements
Write a program that computes the area of a variety of shapes.
